Intro to linux
The Linux OS began as a simple project/hobby of Linus Torvalds. His quest began due to the fact that at the time, OS choices were slim and their code was a closely guarded secret. Several years earlier, a professor had written a limited version of an OS to use as a teaching aid. Torvalds used this code as a model for his new OS. As his project came to life, he made the code available to the public for use and received a great deal of feed back from other programmers as to how the system could be improved. Many versions for Linux, known as Linux distributions, exist today. Such distributions are comprised of a Linux operating system and a collection of applications which are constantly being revised and improved. One of these programs is called Arch Linux and is an independently developed system created to be both lightweight, as well as, simple. The development team's approach to this OS focuses on simplicity, elegance, code correctness and minimalism. A newer distribution called Ubuntu is dedicated to providing an up-to-date, stable operating system for the average user, with a strong focus on usability and ease of installation. Every computer niche now has its own Linux distribution which has been independently altered to address their specific needs. Across the Internet, there are many ways to obtain a Linux distribution. The official Linux web site, Linux, gives the option to find one for the user if it is given information about what the user is looking for. If the user already knows exactly which distribution they are looking for, they can simply go to the website for that specific one. Installing a new OS involves several important steps. Planning is the first, and possibly most important, step to installing Linux correctly. Several sites offer worksheets and other tools to help to planning stage go more smoothly. Like the other OS systems available today, a wide array of applications are offered for use on the Linux system. There are those for communication, graphic, administrative duties, and much more. Just like on a windows OS, users can install a version of AOL for their Linux system. Just like its windows counterpart, the Linux AOL programs (there are several) are a very popular means of communication. Every computer user will most likely require the use of a word processor at some point and Linux has several options. Some are more user friendly then others and there are some that are custom designed for a particular kind of writing. The biggest advantages that Linux has over windows is its free availability and the customization freedom it allows for. What ever your niche happens to be, most likely, there is a Linux out there for you. Downsides include the hassle of installation, which Microsoft does for you, and MS windows programs do not run on Linux without special additional software. |
